A question many of you may have asked yourselves. Well, there is no perfect answer but there are many things to consider when making this decision:
What condition is the frame in? Does it need repairing?
Do you need new seat foam?
How much fabric will it take?
Another important factor to consider is the quality of workmanship when choosing an upholsterer. I always recommend that it is a good idea to pay them a visit. That way you get a good sense of the quality of their workmanship and whether you feel happy leaving your beloved sofa or armchair in their hands.
Before

After

Before making any decisions, ask yourself these few questions:
- Is it a family heirloom or does it have sentimental value?
- Is it COMFORTABLE? (For me, this is the most important question. New is not always better!)
- Does it fit into your room perfectly? Have you shopped around to find a replacement piece?
- Was it custom built for any reason?
Answer yes to any of those then I’d say do it! Professional re-upholstery is a great way to extend the life of your favorite sofa or armchair.
What is the cost of re-upholstery?
This depends on size, detail of design, fabric chosen and if any repair work needs to be done.
Fabric usually is the most expensive part of re-upholstering, but having said that, there are amazing products out there on the market that provide quality without breaking the bank. A good upholsterer will have a wide variety of fabric sampling for you to look at and advise you on making the best choice for your lifestyle.
When asking for a quotation, provide as much information as you can and definitely get a comparative quote. BUT, do remember cheaper is not necessarily better. A great way to start is by sending your upholsterer a good front, back and side image of the items with their measurements. That way they can get a good idea of what is required and the complexity of the job. Ask for an itemized quotation so that you can understand what you are being charged for, for example: labour, foam, fabric and repairs.
Asking questions is important to the success of the job. Discuss detail, like what stitching you would like or if you want piping, what you want the seats to feel like etc. There are many options so ask away! A knowledgeable upholsterer is an informative one.
In summary, yes! Re-upholstery is definitely an option, but most importantly is should be a FUN and HAPPY exercise and not become and stressful event – we have enough of those in our lives.
